The battles against the invading Angels in Neon Genesis Evangelion are magnificent. Which of these five fights, though, was the best?
Neon Genesis Evangelion is replete with stunning confrontations against the invading Angels, despite the fact that the tale is mostly about the myriad shapes mankind may take and yet live. In fact, the Eva software is created specifically to protect the globe from what the characters assume is an uninvited invasion.
At the same time, it’s evident that Angels are very much like humans, despite having a different ancestor – Adam, as opposed to Lilith for humans. Despite the fact that their true intentions are never revealed, this fact is crucial to the narrative philosophy. In any event, they have nothing to do with the end win, which is entirely due to Shinji’s decision. The question is, did he make the right decision?
Unit-00 Vs. Armisael
Rei is prompted to investigate the latest Angel after Armisael claims to be idle. Despite this, it manages to turn itself into a clump of fibers at the last moment, entering Unit-00 to seize control from the pilot.
The creature telepathically bonds with Rei, prompting NERV to dispatch Shinji to her aid. Unfortunately, Unit-01 is also affected by the “curse,” leading Unit-00 to make the ultimate sacrifice: self-destruction. Rei’s last-minute ruse, on the other hand, works.
Unit-00, Unit-01 & Unit-02 Vs. Sahaquiel
Sahaquiel smashes NERV’s scanners by simply expanding his Absolute Terror field in one of the series’ most aesthetically breathtaking bouts. Even the nuclear powers of the N2 mmissiles are ineffective against it, and time is running out when they discover Sahaquiel’s plot to assault the city by kamikaze.
Unit-00’s AT-attenuator and Unit-01’s “strength” are required to defeat this Angel before Unit-02 and Asuka finish it off with an Eva blade.
Unit-00, Unit-01 & Unit-02 Vs. Unit-03/Bardiel
For the first time, Unit-03, led by Toji Suzuhara, enters the conflict against Bardiel, who then “infects” Eva. NERV dispatches the remaining three fighters to save him from the new menace.
Because none of them want to hurt Toji, Unit-03/Bardiel is able to nearly destroy Unit-01. In this scene, Gendo Ikari decides to eliminate Shinji’s option in the matter, allowing Unit-01 to go into “berserk” mode and virtually decimate its opponent. Toji, thankfully, survives the fight, albeit narrowly.
Unit-00 Vs. Arael
Arael never appears on Earth, preferring to attack from the safety of space (and, worse, utilizes a telepathic force to probe through Asuka’s brain, revealing her innermost secrets, effectively destroying her fighting abilities).
To shatter Arael in a single attack, it takes Rei’s last-minute intervention, armed with the Lance of Longinus handed to her by Gendo. Unfortunately, this means that their most powerful weapon will be gone forever, but given the lack of any other options, NERV considers it an acceptable loss.
Unit-00 & Unit-01 Vs. Ramiel
Ramiel is one of the story’s most streamlined Angels, a three-dimensional rhomboid with mirrored sides and an energy beam capable of annihilating enormous swaths of New Tokyo.
Misato Katsuragi uses NERV to persuade the government to reroute the country’s electricity into a “positron gun,” which Shinji will fire while Rei provides any necessary backup. Ramiel deflects the first attack with ease, but the second is successful. If you are a fan of the movie Neon Genesis Evangelion, you can buy Neon Genesis Evangelion merch & Gifts at Evangelion Store.
